Its happenning again tonight and looks to be another outstanding stroll. Terra Nova Gallery is featuring four different artists who have a connection in training and subject matter.

Terra Nova Gallery had a live demonstration at their studio during the November Art Stroll. It was fascinating and I wish I had gotten a picture of the nearly finished piece at the end of the evening, it was very good!

The whole atmosphere of the stroll was upbeat and charged with excitement. At each of the galleries, there were pockets of visitors who wanted to stay and mingle. The photography at Angels Of Philly was notable, as was the art on display at The Windbox Gallery, who have decorated for Christmas already.

We had fun and look forward to next month.

October Downtown Art Chase

The weather was perfect for the art chase last night. At the end of the evening, there were so few folks that turned in entries for the prizes, that those who did will have a high chance of winning. The art was great.

David at the Terra Nova Gallery was open early and ready for visitors. He had water with his own label and art triva on it.

Painted Temple folks were getting ready for the show, Jeanne and I were dropping off stroll information and didn't take the time to see their art work, thinking we would get back and then missing them.

The small art of two women were featured at Rowley press and one couldn't help but be impressed.

The Provo Community Church had quite a lot of art, a really good showing and the refreshments that they prepared was especially geared towards kids. They also had some coloring pages that participants could decorate.

Muse Music had art that was similar to last month.

Juice N Java were scheduled to have a digital photographer on display, his work wasn't there when we visited, but the art piece on the card was.

B.Ashworth's was a first timer participant and a no show so we won't be asking them to participate again.

Perfectly Suited was also a first time participant. He had a couple of art pieces on display.

Bon Bons left up the art from last month and also featured some unique pottery for the chase.

Flower Basket Boutique had some very small items that were interesting.

Angels Of Philley were first time participants and were very excited to be participating. Well done displays, they should prove to be a good place to see the art each month.

The Windowbox Gallery had very nice displays. We enjoyed the featured paintings.

Utah County Art Gallery had their yearly digital art show on display. About half the number of entrys were received as last year, but oh they are worth seeing! The musical entertainment was also quite good.

The Covey Center For The Arts had three artists. The gallery was filled with sound as visitors used mallets to strike the bells that a metal sculptor had on display.

March Gallery Stroll

March Gallery Stroll was an eventful one for sure- between we're not sure how many Chris Purdies, tasty soup at the Covey Center for the Arts, some very interesting Santos Figure at Cat's Cradle, and amazing art at every location- it was really difficult to get to every location. In fact, we're not sure exactly if anyone made the brave trek of going to every location- but it is pretty awesome that there are almost too many locations to choose from. Next month, go to your usual locations, while stopping by a gallery that you haven't been to before- you'll likely be surprised at what you will find... Until next month, enjoy these images-

February Gallery Stroll

February Gallery stroll was a blast! Attendance was better
than January, as expected, with levels of patrons climbing
back up to the usual levels. So many wonderful shows opened,
and it was a great experience visiting with all the artists and
visitors. If you didn't make it out, don't worry- all the locations
are open during the week throughout the rest of the month.
It is always better anyways to go back and take a second look,
while supporting the local businesses who put on gallery stroll.
Look out for March. There are some big shows opening up, and
many different events at the various locations. See you next time!

January's Gallery Stroll was a great success. Things seemed a little slow compared to December (we estimate that for december we had over 2,000 members of the community come out)- although it seems that literally six or seven times the amount of people came out compared to January 2008. And so, it seems that 2009 will be a great year for Gallery Stroll and the arts in Provo. Look out for some great new programs and improvements with Gallery Stroll. What a great turnout we had for Gallery Stroll this month, especially considering the change in date. With the excitement of the Freedom Festival, the parade, and all of the fourth of July celebrations, July was really a special month for the Gallery Stroll. Here are some photos of the opening. Be sure to come check out the great exhibit of children's art now up at the Utah County Art Gallery co-sponsored by the Utah County Art Board and America's Freedom Festival at Provo. Juried artworks by over 100 local children, ages 5-14 will be on display through the month of July. An opening reception will be held Mon., July 7, from 6-9 pm. A special awards ceremony will be held at 7 and 8 pm.

Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll continues to promote culture and art

An event featuring one-of-a-kind art, hip fashion boutiques, fresh music, gourmet food, and ... Provo?

The Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll is no longer the best-kept secret for an enjoyable -- and free -- Friday night. With the recent sprouting of trendy shops and restaurants in the past few years and the continuing revitalization effort in downtown Provo, the stroll is quickly becoming the "it" place to be for students, art connoisseurs, and curious local residents.

The concept of the Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll is genius and is, for the area, experientially unique. On the first Friday of each month, a choice selection of businesses around State Street and University Avenue remain open late from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., while each shop debuts new artwork from local artists.

The public "strolls" from gallery to gallery, mingling with artists, admiring and purchasing their work, picking up cool threads at Coal Umbrella and Mode Boutique, and sampling Italian gelato from Maestro's Gelato Café.

The art remains displayed in the ten businesses involved until the next month when new local artists and their works are showcased. It's a win-win-win situation: Up and coming artists are exposed to the public, local businesses bring potential customers in, and the public is introduced to new art through a fun, interactive experience.

As if that weren't enough, Mode Boutique owners and the Gallery Stroll's coordinators, Ryan and Rebecca Neely, decided to add a twist for the month of April. The theme is art chase. When art strollers visit each exhibit and have a card punched, they will be entered in a drawing for various prizes, including dinners at Guru's and Ottavio's and a night at the Hine's Mansion. Cards are available at all participating venues.

PROVO — Local artists are now hanging their work alongside store merchandise and on the walls of businesses, providing an artistic atmosphere for restaurants while they sell their wares.

The art is exhibited for a month at a stretch. Merchants take 25 percent of any sales.

The exhibitions are part of the monthly First Friday art gallery stroll sponsored by the Provo Downtown Alliance, said Ryan Neely. He and his wife are event directors.

Inside the Metropolitan Salon, BYU English and art student Ashley Christensen opened her exhibition during the February stroll.

A contemporary artist, she works in pen and ink and watercolor. Her larger piece in the exhibit features a single, unmanned parachute in the sky.

Sky imagery is a common theme for Christensen. She uses images in the sky along with birds and airplanes to depict a connection between heaven and earth.

She describes herself as a community artist with a love for interaction.

The paintings are now on silent auction.

Across University Avenue, another BYU art student, Jason Metcalf, has his mixed-media imagery of home and family on the wall, literally, of Neely's Mode Boutique.

Not only have his paintings graced the wall, he enhanced his exhibition with drawings. Once Metcalf's exhibition ended, Neely repaints and lets the next artist, Ruel Brown, redecorate it.

Metcalf's paintings, too, are sold by silent auction.

A Utah native, Metcalf employs a common Utah image, the beehive, to symbolize home and family. While historically the symbol of industry, Metcalf takes a different tack, using honeycombs symbolically in his work.

Last year in New York's Lincoln Center during the Scope Fair, Metcalf rolled around in a tiny house on wheels producing $2 sculptures for art patrons. Cheap art was the underlying theme of the fair, he said.

Family, the house or home, the beehive and the honeycomb have special meaning for him.

"I see it as Utopia, the perfect society," he said. "It's not so much about industry, but (symbolizing) a perfect society."

People outside of Utah don't really get that, he said.

Maestro's Gelato restaurant on Center Street has a new look with Lisa Marie Crosby's large paintings coloring the walls. Also a BYU art student, her choice of media is oil, while her subject is large abstract landscapes.

Each has to do with a memory of a place or event. She chooses muted colors and particularly likes to use seafoam green. A likely combination is muted gray tones juxtaposed next to earthtones with a bright color, such as pink, to set it off.

"I am interested in a play between structure and chaos, intuition and preparation, landscape and memory, texture and color, drawing and painting, and spontaneity and order. Through painting, I literally explore each of these ideas every day as I enter my studio," she said on her blog, www.lisamariecrosby.blogspot.com, where she also has an exhibit of her work.

Freedom Festival Booth

The first Friday of every month, something incredible happens in downtown Provo, Utah. People come out of their homes, young and old, and take a leisurely stroll through Historic Downtown Provo to enjoy art.
For the past several months, Provo has witnessed a dramatic increase in the level of interest in the arts. Local artists, of all genres and media are working harder than ever to create original shows, supplying the never ending demand Provo has for artistic fulfillment and community involvement. If nothing else, it's a great free date once a month; new art openings means free food, and free food means good times, even if you don't like the art!
Several new venues have gotten involved, and not just traditional art galleries. Retail stores, restaurants, and boutiques have all banded together to create this magical event. The equation is simple. More venues equals more art shows, and more art shows means more local artists have places to display art, giving the artists more reasons to produce great art.
By supporting the creative talent we have in our community, we create a sustainable market which allows them to thrive and flourish, instead of simply moving away and taking their talent with them.
